Tina Fey will never take fashion advice from designers

Tina Fey will never take fashion advice from designers

The ’30 Rock’ star - who is currently pregnant with her second child - claims a lot of sartorialists would never don some of their catwalk creations and says it’s a good idea to have a look at what they themselves are wearing.
Writing on her book, ’Bossypants’, Tina said: "A wise friend once told me,
’Don’t wear what fashion designers tell you to wear. Wear what they weear.’

His point being that most designers, no matter what they throw onto the runway, favour simple, flattering pieces for themselves. Anyone who has never met me can tell you that fashion has always been very very very very very very very important to me. For example, I once told my cousin that my dream would be ’if the whole store Express was my closet!’ How prescient, because now, of course, I wear nothing but Express."
As well as not taking advice from designers, the 40-year-old funnywoman also joked she found her own unique look when she was just 19.
She said: "It can’t be said enough. Don’t concern yourself with fashion; stick to simple pieces that flatter your body type . By 19, I had found my look. Oversize T-shirts, bike shorts, and wrestling shoes. To prevent the silhouette from being too baggy, I would clinch it at the waist with my fanny pack. I was pretty sure I would wear this look forever. The shirts allowed me express myself with cool sayings like ’There’s No Crying in Baseball’ and ’Universitat Heidelberg,’ the bike shorts showed off my
muscular legs, and the bum bag held all my trolley tokens. I was nailing it on a daily basis. Find something like this for yourself as soon as possible."

The Fashion of Football: From Best to Beckham, From Mod to Label Slave Overview

The Fashion of Football is a groundbreaking work that examines the link between soccer and fashion. Featuring a selection of rare photographs, the book divides itself into a work of two halves—the first depicting how fashion has influenced the players, and the second showing how it has been represented in the stands. We begin in 1962, when restrictions limiting earnings from professional soccer were lifted and players started to focus on looking good. We visit George Best's boutique in Manchester, try on the Terry Venables' wig, and reveal how the 1970s Chelsea team used flamboyant King's Road boutiques to gain the upper hand in psychological battles with fierce rivals Leeds. We then move on to the '80s to consider the influence British black footballers brought to bear on fashion, leaving room to mention the hairdressers and the mullet. Finally, in the '90s, we're confronted with Liverpool FC in white suits and David Beckham in a skirt.

There is one shade guaranteed to keep you looking cool WHITE.

All-white dressing is HOT news and perfect for the warm weather.
Stella McCartney, Celine and Calvin Klein all showed off structured, simple tailored pieces on their spring catwalks.
There are plenty of pieces on the High Street to work the trend.
Dorothy Perkins' sexy crochet dress would make the perfect bikini cover-up while the New Look mini is a statement dress stylish enough for the office.
Here Fashion Editor TONI JONES picks her cream of the crop.

Excess: Fashion And The Underground In The '80s Overview

Producing a book on fashion in the 1980s is not merely a question of immortalizing one of the most feverish periods of invention, creativity, and variety in our recent history. It also means providing a window on the increasingly pervasive advance of show-business society, and on the origins of the designer "total living" environment in which we are now permanently submerged. Ralph Lauren pillowcases, anyone? How about a sip of Absolut from my Calvin Klein Home champagne glasses?
Excess: Fashion and the Underground in the 80s chronicles the achievements of the fashion establishment in Italy and the rest of the world via its protagonists and trends. It considers the who, what, where, when, and why of an industry that has become an economic phenomenon, with enormous influence on global culture and communication. It catalogues a world in which fashions by Armani, Versace, Valentino, Gianfranco Ferré, Fendi, Missoni, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Fiorucci, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Katherine Hamnett, Azzedine Alaïa, Calvin Klein, and John Galliano appear in magazines like Vogue, Elle, Donna, Mondo Uomo, Harper's Bazaar, The Face, i-D, Interview, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Visionaire. It features work by 80s hotshot artists like Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer, Robert Mapplethorpe, Barbara Kruger, Gilbert & George, Pierre et Gilles, and Leigh Bowery.
Empirically organized as an index, Excess offers an indispensable point of reference for fashionistas, critics, and students. Rather than operating chronologically, it functions thematically, under such categories as Career Women, Sexy Women, American Gigolo, Night Clubbing, Wild Boys, Yuppies, and Graffiti. A special section curated by Peter de Potter is dedicated to the Neo ‘80s, featuring fashions by Jeremy Scott, Louis Vuitton, Berhard Willhelm, Balenciaga, Veronique Branquinho, and Bottega Veneta, as seen in the pages of Butt, Dazed & Confused, SleazeNation, Spin, Self Service, and Another Magazine. Additionally included are a series of appendices--equally balanced between mainstream and underground--which catalogue the new professions, new words, and new fashions.

Edited by Maria Luisa Frisa and Stefano Tonchi. Essays by Stefano Tonchi, Ingrid Sischy, Guy Trebay and Peter De Potter.

Paperback, 6.75 x 9.25 in./446 pgs / 700 color.

F**K-FASHION: The Erotic Photography of Ben Westwood is a celebration of this brilliant young photographer’s more explicit work. Ben was born in London in 1963 and is the eldest son of Vivienne Westwood, the famous British cutting-edge fashion designer. He is a professional photographer who pursues his specific interest in erotic images of women by photographing a heady combination of stylish clothing and lingerie worn (or not) by very pretty models with admirably few inhibitions. This dynamite mix has created a book, full of rich, saturated colour, which will appeal to the style- and fashion-conscious as well as erotic photography lovers.

Fashion in Photographs Overview

Over 150 period photographs are featured in this book, showing a wide variety of dress worn between 1880 and 1900. Although some of the photographs are studio portraits by the leading photographers of the day there are photographs of middle-class Victorians too: intellectuals, artists, eccentrics, and businessmen, whose sober, practical garb is in telling contrast to the lavish fabrics and impractical designs worn by high society. The source of illustration is the National Portrait Gallery Archive which contains a collection of over 100,000 photographs and original negatives. Sarah Levitt's selection principally comprises photographs never before published. It also contains some unfamiliar images of well-known historical figures, such as Henry Irving, Queen Victoria, Camille Saint-Saëns, Lillie Langtry and many more. Each photograph is accompanied by a full caption that not only describes both costume and accessories, but also goes on to explain how and where the clothes were made; what they felt like to wear; how the fashions developed; and how the clothes were cleaned and cared for. To do this, the author has supported original research with contemporary quotations and anecdotes from diaries, fashion magazines, newspapers and other Victorian memorabilia. This book is an absorbing and informative account of the fashion and social history of this period, and will be enjoyed by everyone interested in fashion, photography, and the Victorian age.

Edward Steichen: In High Fashion: The Conde Nast Years 1923-1937 Overview

The most extensive collection of Steichen's legendary Vogue and Vanity Fair work ever brought to the public. Edward Steichen was already a famous painter and photographer in America and abroad when, in early 1923, he was offered the most prestigious position in photography's commercial domain: that of chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Over the next fifteen years, Steichen would produce a body of work of unequaled brilliance, dramatizing and glamorizing contemporary culture and its achievers in politics, literature, film, sport, dance, theater, opera, and the world of high fashion. Here are iconic images of Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin as well as numerous other celebrities drawn from an archive of more than two thousand original prints. Until now, no more than a handful have been exhibited or published in book form. The photographs of the 1920s and 1930s represent the high point in Steichen's career and are among the most striking creations of twentieth-century photography. 242 illustrations
