    I 3rd this.

Why not update them too? I understand that the MBP is PRO but still. What would the MB's be getting then as far as an update at some point?

If they continue to use Yonah, it differentiates the lines better and either allows Apple to reap a bigger profit as Yonah prices drop or they can pass that savings along to the consumer. (Or they can use the money saved on Yonah chips to up the standard RAM configuration to 1 GB...)

Globalization is a race to the bottom, and nobody seems to understand that while the 3rd world rises up, the 1st world inevitably must slide down.

It's not a zero sum game. Western economies will increasingly shift toward higher skilled professions as the BRIC countries take over manufacturing and mid level white collar work. The U.S. must step up its educational training in order for its many low paid service workers to move up the ladder, though.

Are you not familiar with the concept of an idiot? Seriously there is only so much you can do with some people. This whole idea that education can solve all our problems is bogus. Some people are beyond education and others like Steve J. Find a different path.

Beyond that you can't really have an economy without some sort of manufacturing. You know it is half of the goods and services phrase.

In any event Apples problems are age old and directly related to relying on a single supplier. Hopefully they can get this material they need manufactured in another plant. If not Apple will end up having some pretty bad quarters.

Yeah, but it's also the only way to get a 7200 rpm hard drive. I've read things about the hard drives not being user replaceable. Now I've taken apart several old Thinkpads and replaced motherboards and even the screens, but there warranties were up. I don't feel like voiding the warranty on my Mac.

I also think that this return policy is rather asinine. As another user stated, there are only 3 options to customize. Dell machines are highly configurable and they will refund you (minus 15% restocking fee though).

Unfortunately, that's just the way it is with apple, and it's despicable.

I'm hoping with the next MBP update, they also tweak the enclosure to allow for an easily swappable HDD, like the macbook. It simply isn't fair that a lower end model gets a great feature like that and the higher end gets screwed. I would be sorely disappointed if this did not happen with the update.

Because of return policy issues, I will probably go ahead and get the 5400rpm drive. It seems like much less hassle to stay away from BTO systems if something goes wrong.

Yo! check out this key clause to Amazon's Terms Of Use >

5.2.Our Right to Access Your Files.
You give us the right to access, retain, use and disclose your account information and Your Files: to provide you with technical support and address technical issues; to investigate compliance with the terms of this Agreement, enforce the terms of this Agreement and protect the Service and its users from fraud or security threats; or as we determine is necessary to provide the Service or comply with applicable law.

    WTF ???!!!

Thank you for digging that out. Obviously no one should ever use this. Uploading your stuff to their servers = unlimited access by them to your stuff.

Great. No thanks, Amazon. Not that I trust Apple more than you (I don't), but you make it clear that you likely will access people's documents, files, photos, audio.

You'll get the dumb squad to sign up for your crap. They always come out whenever there is something bad to sign up for.

umm....that magazine add looks rather real to me. WTF?

on another note, Vodafones 3G network here in NZ has video calls as standard on every phone they sell for the network. Its not revolutionary, they have had it since December last year. It doesnt cost any more than a regular mobile to mobile call. oh, and the person calling is the only one who pays (the fact that americans pay to answer a call is insane).

They also have an itunes sized music library that you can browse and download to your phone ( its 3.50NZD per track, which is about $2 USD). Its quite popular seeing as Apple has chosen not to have an Itunes store in New Zealand. They have sold hundreds of thousands of ipods, but there is nowhere to download songs legally. stupid huh? :(

We pay full retail for most phones, but we aren't locked into any sort of contract. And to the person who said txting should be banned from apples phone: why call someone for ten times the price of a SMS text when you dont need too?

find me a Tablet that costs less than a small notebook. No, you won't find it, sorry...
    <snip>
And where are the tablets? NOWHERE, because they only fit the bills of us freaks desiring a nice pen-based Mac...
    <snip>
Construction companies have used PDAs for years, including the Newton...and that's why a mere evolution of such products is more than enough.
You may have to consider that when there's a rumour "Apple is making a tablet".... that they may be making something that is not a pen-based Mac, and hence is cheaper than a small notebook. It may even be an evolution of the Newton.

You seem to spew a lot of reasons that tablets haven't worked in the past. I agree if Apple does the same as other tablet makers have in the past, it won't work. But I think we all agree with that don't we?

ps. No point abusing others' ideas.

2002 called, they want their platform idea back.

Seriously, does anyone here even hear about tablet PCs anymore? Nope.
What happened with Microsoft Origami? Nothing.
What are people wanting to use for computing on the go? A smart phone.

Apple didn't get involved when this was "the rage" and I couldn't be happier. The idea never became anything more than a niche product in health care, manufacturing, and perhaps education. It bombed. And Apple wasn't left holding the bag on a bunch of unsold product. Another "failure in this companies beleaguered history" as it would be used as fodder in the press.

    But now Apple has incentive.

    And patents.

    And verge products.

It wouldn't blow me away for Apple to have an ARM OS X running somewhere in there laps, hell OS X ran on intel from day one.

But any chance of release seems unlikely until ARM locks down a solid preforming CPU. Although is Apple and Microsoft come up with a good was to have x86 and ARM support in one OS, then both chips throughout Apple line might makes sense.

For now, I see Apple being too close(developing Thunderbold, getting chips early) to leave Intel.

And still..... nobody knows if you can just buy a random off the shelf nvidia 7800 and plop it into this sucker.

my powermac g4 died, but can SOMEONE, just ANYONE go into their 'system profiler' and see if they have a list of all the compatible video cards? i seem to remember you could get some information like that in the profiler or some other such app. or if you're an elite hacker, open up terminal and go to /usr/x.org or wahtever it is and see if the nvidia drivers are there.

overall excited. definitely buying a 2ghz mac pro as soon as it's in the stores.

I'd love to see a three tier release. 3gs at the budget end, iPhone 4 in the midrange and the 5 at the top end.

Looking forward to whatever enhancements Apple bring with it.

I don't see that happening. Apple tends to avoid complicated product lines. That is one too many options in my opinion.

Android is funded by target advertising? I didnt know that, can you provide a link that backs this up?

Android costs money to develop. Android from what has been put out there is free for companies to use with no licensing fee. So how is Google able to generate money to pay people to code and maintain the software?

    1. Google is generating money through it's normal search business which is well documented to know where you are at (physically and on the web) and where you have been (on the web).

    2. Google is generating money through advertising generated via the Android platform. If this is the case, it would seem very like they would employ the same tactics used in standard desktop web advertising in the mobile spectrum. So logic and past actions would dictate but if that isn't enough then how about the patent Google was awarded for advertising on the mobile platform based on location? http://www.gomonews.com/google-and-the-art-of-self-defense-location-based-mobile-advertising-patent-is-probably-anti-apple-weaponry/

They use a lot more CPU time to process though.

Again, KDE 2.0, 10 years ago. My Pentium 2 333 mhz didn't break a sweat doing SVG icons then (the Krystal SVG icon theme). ;)

I seriously doubt this is even an issue.

You said yourself that wallpapers should be vector graphics. And by that, I presumed you meant the background in the subject of the thread. Safari supports SVG, but imo, it's not really a big thing that there's no support for it as a wallpaper. It's not the first thing people think of when they list Snow Leopard's shortcomings :P

Sure it's not, but why bother making bigger and bigger pixel images when implementing vector art both has precedent (Gnome, KDE, all the Linux WMs or almost all of them) and is superior for this application.

For images that can't be easily converted, I'm with you. But I don't understand the resistance to SVG support, which would be a decade late. Sure it's not a shortcoming, but in light of these stories, it would be a "nicer to have".

    Not enough for my collection.

And never felt like I had to download music at work and anywhere else.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but ...

I do like the idea of not having to back stuff up in case I lose it to a hard drive crash.

5gb ain't enough to cover my collection however.

And those design changes still have to be made in the future if you want to run kentsfield. Since those changes are inevitable, why not make them sooner and take advantage of cheaper chips earlier?

Since the intel switch, apple has ALREADY broken away from "what they've always done". We saw a speed bump in MPB before it even shipped, and another bump not long after that.

No, they were *announced* at the same time. iMac shipped immediately, MBP shipped weeks later. So the intel iMacs did arrive first.

i stand corrected. the macbook pros didn't ship till febuary though they could be preordered. The iMacs began shipment in january right after the announcment

it definitely is a strong consideration with a few add'l features for $10 more ... including that it works w/ both iphone and ipod touch, works w/ cases/skins, rotation notches seem firmer, and bluetooth works while off mount ... if you can get over the overall cost, the extra $10 is probably worth it.

i received the TT car kit as a gift ... and enjoying it every day :D

Yet another sign Apple is going to kill the Mac Pro.

You'll see! With Final Cut Pro on it's deathbed there is no way the Mac Pro is sticking around!

    /s

doubtful, this is a key switcher market... it would be crazy to axe the very thing that will continue to switch the PC builders/gamers over the next 5 years... this is a key ingredient to apple taking the industry over with time.

These sound sweet, I want one.

But it's funny how the whole Mac Pro is a killer machine but they still neglect the video cards, seriously a nVidia Geforce 7300GT.

If you don't like the video card then upgrade it to the quadro and go play your Doom 3 at 110fps...
